Basic Flush Valve Information

Douglas Valve/Flush Valve

The Douglas Valve, also known as the Flush Valve, releases water from the tank into the toilet bowl. Various types of flush valves are used, and it's important to identify the specific type used in your toilet. Some toilets require specific, proprietary parts. Installing incorrect or inferior parts in a toilet today can lead to problems in the future.

Overflow Tubes

The overflow tubes are made of brass and come in three different sizes: 1 inch, 1 1/8 inches, and 1 1/4 inches. These measurements refer to the outside diameter of the tubes. They all screw into the base of the Douglas Valve, and it's common for them to break at the base while changing the tank ball. The overflow tube is important because it prevents the tank from overflowing. Additionally, the Hush tube goes into the overflow tube to provide rim rinse in the bowl.

Upper Lift Wire
The upper lift wire is usually 8 inches long and bent to fit each closet. When replacing it, be sure to use only solid copper or solid brass lift wires. The upper lift wire connects the lower lift wire to the tank handle.

Tank Guide

The tank guide is attached to the overflow tube and then adjusted to ensure that the lower lift wire is centered over the seat of the Douglas valve. The best guides are made of brass and can be adjusted to fit different types of Douglas valves.

Lower Lift Wire

The lower lift wire connects the upper lift wire to the tank ball. The wires come in lengths of 4 inches, 4-½ inches, and 5 inches, and the preferred materials are solid copper or solid brass. There is also a 5 ½ inch wire, but it is specifically used in an Eljer tank with a bolt-on guide.

Tank Ball

The tank ball keeps water in the tank until it is flushed. It is connected to the lower lift wire. The most common size is between 2 3/8" and 2 ¾”, although a 3” tank ball was also used. It's important to note that you can't accurately measure an old tank ball because, over time, exposure to water causes it to expand and deteriorate.

Flush Valve Shank Gasket

The flush valve makes the seal between the Douglas Valve and the bottom of the inside of the tank. This prevents the water from leaking on the floor with wall-hung tanks.

Lock Nut

The lock nut is on the bottom of the tank and holds the Douglas valve on.
